Quilt No. 104
The Hibernia Quilt Pattern
Hibernia. Now that is a 10 point word! Does it sound familiar? Almost like hibernate, right? (I could cuddle under my Hibernia quilt and hibernate, that’s for sure!) Hibernia is the classical Latin name for Ireland, meaning land of the eternal winter. But it is anything but dreary! I may have never been there, but I can go there vicariously through Rachel Erickson’s artwork in her newest fabric collection, “Chloe” created for Riley Blake Designs. There are so many nods to Ireland from the sweet shamrocks to the colorful butterflies. The playful pooches catching butterflies are an added bonus. The Hibernia quilt pattern was designed for Rachel’s specific fabric line “Chloe” to highlight all her darling artwork!
The Hibernia quilt pattern was inspired by the Emerald Isle itself! With a green log cabin star block surrounded by a sea of clovers, framed with contrasting log cabin borders. Made for beginners, this pattern is a large scale basic log cabin medallion-style quilt that has the option of using your favorite fabric scraps, or unused jelly roll strips. It finishes at 50” x 64” (the perfect throw size), but you can choose to make it bigger or smaller by adding more or less jelly roll strips. This quilt comes together so quickly. I was able to make two quilt tops in a single weekend!
It just so happened that my sewing machine was having it’s yearly appointment at the spa and I needed a little extra meditative, repetitive handiwork when it came time to quilt this cutie. Hence, hand quilting! Hand quilting is my happy place, it helps me find my zen. The strips on the quilt top provided a perfect guide for big stitch-in-the-ditch practice. I was able to flex my creative muscles in the negative space surrounding the star to create the perfect frame to accentuate it. If I could go back, I would attempt to quilt a Celtic knot on the top and bottom of the center star! Then Hibernia would be completely infused in all aspects of the quilt: the fabric, the pattern AND the quilting!
As you may know, all patterns created by Cobabe Co. are inspired by children’s literature (kidlit). A quilt is incomplete without a book! These special books are fabulous for learning more about the legends of old Ireland and it’s unique sites and landscapes. As you cuddle under your recently made quilt with the little ones in your life, you will make lasting memories while reading through the fascinating stories and viewing the incredible artwork in the books listed below (click on the books to get a quick synopsis). If you are planning on giving this quilt away, these books make great accompanying reads that can be gifted along with the quilt:
