Origin Story

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Chelsey. She loved to read. She loved art. She loved her family. Chelsey was pregnant with her first baby. Working full-time and always on the brink of exhaustion, Chelsey had very little time and energy to express her creativity. She had always been crafty and loved all the tactile things. One day she wandered into a local quilt shop looking for craft supplies and was in awe at the multitude of colors, textures, and varieties of fabric. It took a lot of restraint for her not to buy the entire store. So she settled with five different fabrics, determined to make a quilt for her unborn baby.

That was the plan. But sometimes life takes the plans we make and flushes them down the toilet.

Fast forward four years (during which she moved four different times, added two additional babies to the mix, endured some dark times and celebrated milestones), and at last Chelsey finished the quilt! She was the queen of the world!

The first quilt with the first babe.

Tale as old as time: pandemic hits the globe, strict quarantine regulations are put in place, and Chelsey was homebound with her little ones. Minimal social interaction with other adults, combined with not leaving the house for weeks created the perfect breeding ground for her growing obsession. Chelsey was riding the “completed quilt high,” learning more about quilting while creating masterpieces and developing a desire to create her own quilt patterns. So she did!

That’s me. I’m Chelsey. Since I’ve started quilting, I have realized how much quilting tells a story- as with many other art mediums. The fabrics used and the patterns followed to create a quilt become a testament to where we are in our lives.

Currently in my life, I find myself cherishing the time I spend with my children- especially when we’re all huddled together reading books (a major perk being that no one is fighting, aside from the occasional grumble of not being able to see the pictures). Seeing my kids’ curiosity grow as they ask questions about what we read and how it pertains to the world around them is priceless. I memorialize these moments by creating modern quilt patterns that are inspired by the stories that I read my children. I never want to forget how special this time of my life is!

Think back to your childhood- is there a particular book that you connected with? Wouldn’t you love to commemorate those warm nostalgic feelings by wrapping up in a quilt inspired by that story? Me too. Join me as I discover new books, and old classics and interpret them into modern designs.

Welcome to Cobabe Co. What is your story?
